Course Description

Includes a voucher to take the SPD TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION EXAM through C.S.P.D.T national certification exam upon completion.

Certified Registered Central Service Technicians work in health care facilities to prepare and sterilize devices and supplies used to care for patients. This program offers the training and clinical experience to become a certified Central Service Technician.  

Central Sterile Processing technicians decontaminate, inspect, assemble and sterilize instruments and surgical trays. The technician also manages inventory control, orders supplies, inspects, maintains and delivers, and retrieves equipment from the surgery suite, emergency room, and intensive care units. This allows them to ensure the efficient management, storage and maintenance of medical devices. This program is allocated into classroom participation, lab simulations to identify, clean, and store surgical and other common usable instruments that require sterility. Some topics covered in this program include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, infection prevention and control, tools for cleaning, safety and decontamination. Graduates of this program will have understanding of central service workflow, basic job knowledge and skills, basic job responsibilities and central service concerns.

Outcome

National Association and Certification Exams -

The Certified Registered Central Service Technician prepares students for multiple practice roles and national certifications. As an entry-level clinical profession this program is ideal for students in the allied health care field. The National Certification examinations require that students should have a high school diploma or completed the General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

The exams students could be eligible for include:

•CBSPD Technician (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution)
•Certified Registered Central Service Technician by IAHCSMM - Each exam has various requirements for eligibility and must be met before registration of any exam

  • Wrapping Packaging: Packaging Techniques, Pouches, Flat Wraps, and Rigid Containers;Label/Expiration Dates
  • Assembly Instrument/Procedure Trays: Assembly/layouts, inspection, Identification, Use
  • Sterilization: High Temperature and low Temperature Sterilization Process, Sterilization Quality Assurance Systems, Record Keeping, Handling/Putting Away Sterile Supplies, Dust Covering)
  • Quality Assurance and Policies and Procedures: Quality Assurance Process, Blood Borne Pathogen protocols, Soiled Equipment Pick-Up, Standards, Regulations, Policies and Procedures
